A brief history of Buitrago del Lozoya

Buitrago del Lozoya is a charming town located in the Community of Madrid, Spain, with a history dating back to medieval times. Founded during the Muslim domination of the Iberian Peninsula, Buitrago was conquered by Christian troops in the 11th century, becoming a strategic point in the defense of the northern border of the Kingdom of Castile.

Its location next to the Lozoya River gave it a privileged defensive position and a flourishing trade. The town experienced periods of prosperity and conflict over the centuries, including Muslim raids and internal conflicts.

In the following centuries, Buitrago del Lozoya has witnessed different historical events, such as the War of the Spanish Succession and the Spanish Civil War, leaving its mark on the local architecture and culture.

How to get to the Buitrago del Lozoya viewpoint

There are many ways to cross the river, but today I'm going to show you the most accessible one where you'll be able to park your car without leaving the town.

Once we reach Buitrago, we will have to continue along Avenida de Madrid until we reach the bridge where Calle Cinco Villas begins. Once we reach this street, we will have to continue straight until we find a gas station with a dirt parking lot next to it. This is where we can leave the car.

Once we have left the car with our camera and picnic bag, we will have to follow the road to the opposite side of the petrol station, that is, in a northerly direction. A few metres later we will have reached our "access door".

Once we have passed this entrance, there is only a quiet and not very long walk through the countryside until we reach our viewing point, following the path to the top. Although I must say that along the way you will find different spots where you can have a picnic if you can't wait to start eating.
